Dorothy, the Wizard and Toto Too,
Archetypes, Big Dreams, Me and You

Salon: Sunday, February 26, 2006, 3:00-5:00 PM

2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the first showing of "The Wizard of Oz" on network television. In the days before videos and DVD's made the viewing of films a private, at-home casual and common pastime, the experience of film was heightened by the limits of its availability, either in the theater or on the TV screen, and by sharing the event with so many others - friends and neighbors, a wider community and perhaps even the entire nation. Limited by the number of options, a television event could become a significant and poignant experience for the wider culture.

Today the poignancy is lost to so many options. However, "The Wizard of Oz" was such an event for a major part of our nation's population for a generation or two. How has it shaped us? How has it informed us? Springing into the life of the nation in the mid-1950's, what values, either temporal or archetypal, did it impart to our common life together? And why has the magic lasted so long in the lives of those who saw it year after year when they were but children?

Mr. Carruth will explore the wisdom and wonder of Dorothy's adventure as well as its enchantment of the American public.
